Intel wireless display: hands-on review

Intel’s Wireless Display technology was created to allow laptop users to transmit video and sound from their computers to television screens wirelessly. I recently had a chance to put the tech through its paces, and would like to share my experiences with you.

intel_wireless_display_1

Several laptops with Core i5 CPUs come with this feature built in. The folks at Intel were kind enough to send us a Sony VAIO VPCS111FM laptop, along with the $119 NETGEAR Push2TV receiver module for testing. Setting up the system is pretty painless.

netgear_push2tv_boX

Just plug the Push2TV into an outlet, then connect it to your TV using either the HDMI or composite outputs. I only tested with HDMI, and I would think picture quality would suffer greatly on composite – especially at today’s resolutions.

intel_wireless_display_button

Before pairing, I would recommend that you make sure you have the latest Intel Wireless Display software and reboot the laptop. Once  you do that and the Push2TV is powered on, you simply press the special wireless display button on the PC, select the display you want to connect to, and pair up by entering  a 4-digit auth code displayed on the TV.

intel_wireless_display_config

Upon establishing a connection, the computer automatically switches into 1280×720 (720p) resolution, which appears to be the maximum resolution the technology currently supports. Audio on your laptop is also automatically muted once connected, so as not to have a maddening echo across the room. Yes, there is a slight (less than 1/2 second) delay between what you do on the the laptop and when it appears on your TV screen, but it would only be a problem if you were trying to use the wireless display to play games – clearly not the primary use case for this.

intel_wireless_keyboard_cat

As you can see from these photos, your TV really does display exactly what’s on your PC, which is cool for web surfing, and enjoying all manner of online content on your TV. Keep in mind that since they’re using Windows display mirroring to achieve this, so you can’t display different content on the TV from what’s on your laptop.

intel_wireless_display_hulu

I tested with everything from YouTube to Hulu to Vimeo to Netflix, and all video content played back very well across from across the room. Web content and PC applications are where the technology clearly shines.

So what’s the bad news? Well, the biggest issue with this wireless display tech is that it failed to work with every single DVD I threw at it, thanks to copyright protection issues. I tried new discs and old ones, and every one eventually displayed the dreaded copyright fail message. Sometimes I’d get as far as the FBI warning, and other times the disc would just fail to play entirely. Conversely, all discs I tested played properly on the PC when the wireless display was disabled.

windows_copyright_dvd_message

While I am disappointed by this shortcoming, it’s really a non-issue for streamed content, your home movies, and digital videos played locally on your machine. It really only comes into play with DVDs or Blu-ray discs.

intel_wireless_display_2

One other note: If you only have a 5GHz network set up, you need to switch your laptop to use the 2.4GHz network on your router, as the Push2TV doesn’t support 5GHz networks. Also keep in mind that the recommended distance between your computer and the Push2TV is a maximum of 12 feet away for best performance.

So with its gaming limitations and DVD/Blu-ray playback, and competition from devices like Google TV and Apple TV, you may wonder where the Intel Wireless Display tech fits in. Well, it does have a place. In my opinion, it would be absolutely great for business presentations where you want to get content from your laptop onto a big screen TV. I have this exact situation in my office, and it would be way easier to use this for the occasional presentation instead of running an HDMI to DVI cable across the room – and that doesn’t support audio. The wireless connection is a real bonus in those situations. And since it doesn’t really add to the cost of the laptops, the $119 MSRP Push 2 TV is your only cost – and you can find that at Amazon for only $85 these days.

The system also has got a leg up over dedicated devices in that services like Hulu and other web-based content video sites can’t be blocked from playback on your big screen like they have been on Google TV. Sure, the system’s limitations do narrow its usefulness, but it’s still got some differentiators. If Intel could find a way to reduce the lag and to allow playback of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, it would be just that much more compelling for entertainment purposes. That said, if you need to do business presentations and have a big screen TV with an HDMI input, Intel’s Wireless Display technology is a solid bet.

There's Another 21:9 3DTV in Town

There's Another 21:9 3DTV in Town

Until now it's only been Philips that's had truly-widescreen 21:9 TVs, but Taiwanese company AUO has got in on the action with what they're claiming is the world's largest 3DTV with that aspect ratio, at 71-inches.

Of course, when only one other company has taken a stab at 21:9 TVs (and invented the damn things), it's not much of a boast. Philips has done two now—a non-3D one last year, and a 58-inch 3D titanium one this year, which goes on sale in the UK this month for £3,999—around $6,500 in the States.)

While not many of us will have heard of the brand AUO, they're claiming that their LED-backlit LCD has a 240Hz frame rate, and a very thin bezel, which you can see in the photo. Bizarrely, they're joining LG in the passive polarizing 3D camp, and while some people prefer passive 3D, the resolution is halved so most prefer active shutter 3DTV. [AUO via Akihabara News]

AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) announced today that it will soon showcase for the first time a series of the latest 3D display technologies: the world's largest 71" 21:9 Cinema Scope HD (CSHD) 3D TV LCD panel(*); a large, interactive 3D touch panel solution with video game applications; a leading 65" QFHD 4K2K lenticular lens 3D LCD TV panel; and an array of 3D displays for various applications at FPD International 2010 in Japan from November 10 to 12. These products highlight AUO's innovative efforts and breakthroughs in the home theater, entertainment and commercial markets, and demonstrate the Company's ability to provide 3D total solutions.

AUO announced the world's largest 71" 21:9 Cinema Scope HD (CSHD) 3D TV LCD panel with high quality 3D images
After putting on the polarized 3D glasses, audiences will enjoy a lifelike stereoscopic world with high image quality and brightness
AUO is presenting the world's largest 71" CSHD 3D TV panel for maximal visual enjoyment. The 21:9 ultra-wide screen offers a stunning, cutting-edge theatrical experience of high quality 3D images. The panel is designed with a 240Hz double frame rate, LED scanning backlight and optimized parameters for better motion flow. The new ultra-narrow border design presents the images in even more delightful proportions. Wearing polarized 3D glasses, audiences will be able to enter a lifelike stereoscopic world filled with images of extraordinary clarity and brightness.

AUO will also exhibit a naked eye 3D display solution: the 65" QFHD 4K2K lenticular lens 3D panel. Its proprietary technology has resolved the problem of uneven brightness that occurs with conventional 3D displays, raising the resolution of a single viewpoint to high definition. The 3D panel has brightness as high as 500 nits, with eight viewpoints. Its fine image quality is suitable for commercial use, making the panel the most eye-catching large-sized public information display currently available.

In response to the growing demand for interactive 3D multimedia, AUO has combined its 65" full HD 3D display with an advanced and accurate 3D interactive solution to provide a superlative gaming experience. The infrared video camera detects the player's movements as he or she interacts with the 3D images. Reacting in real time to lifelike 3D images, players can enjoy the most amazing gaming experience possible with today's technology. For audio-visual entertainment, gamers have no better option.

AUO will also showcase a 4" 3D interactive touch panel suitable for use with smartphones, video game consoles and tablet PCs. The light pen and touch panel are integrated for the first time so that users can move within three dimensions-horizontally, vertically and in depth. For players of interactive 3D games, a fun and interesting 3D world becomes readily accessible. Adding spice to the mobile life, the 4" portrait / landscape barrier 3D touch panel leads the industry by allowing users to freely move their fingers about on the touch panel and switch between 2D and 3D modes in portrait or landscape positions.

AUO works continuously and creatively to achieve innovations and breakthroughs in 3D technology. AUO aims to create products that provide consumers with audio-visual experiences of sensational quality and intense satisfaction. AUO also leverages both its complete production lines and mass production capabilities for more business opportunities in the 3D market, aiming to place itself in a leadership position.

The Smartest Advancements in Technology Series: The CPU

Intel Smart TV ?

What five technologies have made our lives easier, better, and more efficient? Hard to choose, right? Well, inspired by the next tech advancement, Intel smart, we've done it for you. Last week we brought you the MRI. Today: the century-defining CPU.

The Smartest Advancements in Technology Series: The CPU

The central processing unit—or CPU, for the acronym-adoring—has perhaps made more significant contributions to our daily lives than any other 20th-century invention. From personal computers to toys to medical equipment, the CPU has become an inextricable part of our existence. Any mechanized object that beeps, boops, has a screen, or accomplishes a task that you are incapable of completing without technology, probably houses a CPU somewhere in its core. Therefore, trying to explain the effects that the CPU has had upon our culture is like trying to give a brief answer about why the sun is important.

So here's a timeline of our favorite applications from the '70s, '80s, '90s and today:

The '70s

In 1971, the Intel 4004 became the first complete single-chip CPU and commercially available microprocessor. The Busicom 141-PF calculator was the first product to use the 4004, once and for all eliminating the need to remove one's shoes before figuring out complicated equations.

The '80s

The Smartest Advancements in Technology Series: The CPUSay what you will about the '80s, for electronic music fans, the decade rocked. Sequential Circuits' Prophet 5 synthesizer, featured in most songs played at the class of 1981's homecoming dance, was the first keyboard to utilize a microprocessor. The chip was able to detect when a note was played and then assigned each note to a voice using a voice allocation algorithm which created a polyphonic effect. And so a whole generation of pop stars were born.

The '90s

Although personal computers entered the market in the late '70s and became exponentially more popular in the '80s, it wasn't until the Clinton years that a computer in every home was added onto the chicken/pot, car/garage list of inalienable rights. Moore's Law,, which in the 1960s predicted a constant expansion of CPU capability, took off and soon CPUs were faster, more powerful and—key word—cheaper than ever before. Submit to your '90s computing nostalgia by playing the original Doom, or plug in that dial-up and surf this archive of Geocities (R.I.P.) pages.

The '00s

The Smartest Advancements in Technology Series: The CPUOnce people got over that whole Y2K thing and realized computers weren't (at least immediately) going to cause global destruction, the aughts were a pretty good era for the CPU. McDonald's brought the world its very first microprocessor-powered Happy Meal toy, all of a sudden our pockets were able to hold a thousand songs (and so, so much more). And just 40-odd years after the first silicon chip was invented, we are now able to implant them into human cells. From calculators to cyborgs in under two generations? Not bad, CPU. Not bad.

Where would humankind be without the CPU And we'll be asking ourselves that same question about Intel smart TV sooner than later, because the combination of Internet and television is surely the next in line in the Smartest Advancements in Technology all-time rankings.

Tune in later this week to see what the next revolutionary and utter indispensable item in the Smartest Advancements in Technology Series is. Hint: We'll never look at dancing silhouettes the same say.

And click here to find out more about Intel smart TV: where Internet meets television.

This Is Sony's $1399 Google TV-Powered Internet TV

This Is Sony's 99 Google TV-Powered Internet TV

We're live at Sony's Internet TV press conference, where we're seeing the "world's first HDTV powered by Google TV" (and its gnarly remote). Not bad at all, $1400 for the 46-inch model, available this weekend. Updated.

Check out our first impressions. We like!

The Hardware

This Is Sony's 99 Google TV-Powered Internet TV

• There's four Sony Internet TV models: 24 inches ($600), 32 inches ($800), 40 inches ($1000) and 46 inches ($1400)
• They're all 1080p edge-lit LED sets—except the 24-inch model, which is CCFL-backlit—with built-in Wi-Fi, four HDMI inputs and four USB ports
• They're available for pre-order at SonyStyle.com now and "on shelves" this weekend
• Sony is also offering an accompanying, Internet-capable Blu-ray deck
This Is Sony's 99 Google TV-Powered Internet TV
• The Sony TV will be the only Google TV-enabled device available for this holiday season
• The TV appears to lack much of the hardware functionality of the other Google TV device we've seen so far, such as the Logitech Revue's video chatting.

The Google TV Implementation

The Internet TV uses Chrome for its Google TV browser and search functionality. Search will cull content from live TV, your DVR, and the web, as well as serving up bookmarked programming. The Sony Internet TV will be able to tap into the rest of Google TV's Android ecosystem.

Navigating the menus felt less fluid than Logitech's implementation with the Revue—lag was a bit noticeable through some parts of the interface. The menu structure itself is intuitive enough—standard Google TV fare—and a Sony rep confirmed that content-wise, the only thing they're adding to Google's platform is a couple dozen "Sony Recommends" video channels.

The Keypad

This Is Sony's 99 Google TV-Powered Internet TV
Sony is touting their button-encrusted, remote as a definitive, convenient way of managing its Internet TV and Blu-ray setup. We're still trying to guess what all those buttons do. Sony says design elements have been borrowed from the PS3, in addition to a full QWERTY keyboard and mouse functionality.

Philips Bringing 21:9 3D Cinema Display to the Home

Philips Bringing 21:9 3D Cinema Display to the HomePhilips has quite an exciting announcement for home cinema fans at its IFA press conference today—it's upgrading its 21:9 Cinema display with Full HD 3D capabilities.

The 58" extra-wide widescreen Cinema 21:9 Platinum display has also been updated to use a direct lit LED screen with 400Hz picture processing, plus the weird Ambilight technology Philips likes that illuminates the wall behind your TV while you watch has also been carried across from the previous non-3D model.

It also comes with Philips' Net TV widgets, for browsing eBay during the adverts—plus you're now able to fiddle with Net TV while watching actual TV in a dual-viewing mode, if you're not very good at concentrating. [Philips via T3 and TechRadar]

Nanotech First Claimed By LG's LEX8 LED TV

Nanotech First Claimed By LG's LEX8 LED TV

It looks like nanotech-based screen technology is nearer than we thought—LG's claiming its upcoming LEX8 adds "NANO Lighting Technology" to its new top-end LED backlit TV model, the LG LEX8.

LG's press release doesn't go into any hardcore technical detail about how this makes its standard LED backlighting any better, simply claiming the new set produces "brighter, clearer and smoother" pictures. The end result is a TV only .88cm thick, which is 0.34 of a standard imperial inch. [LG]

COMPLETE 3D, COMPLETE PLEASURE

COMPLETE 3D, COMPLETE PLEASURE: LG SHOWCASES A FULL RANGE OF 3D DEVICES FOR SUPREME 3D EXPERIENCE
With TVs, Home Theater Systems, Blu-ray Disc™ Players and Projectors, LG Brings Every Element of Home Entertainment Together in its Complete 3D Collection

SEOUL, Aug. 30, 2010 – At this year's IFA, LG Electronics (LG) is showing participants at the 2010 IFA tradeshow how it's staying ahead of the 3D curve. Showcasing a range that includes everything from the very latest in NANO FULL LED and Plasma TVs, to Home Theater Systems and Blu-ray Disc™ Players, to the only complete selection of 3D projectors, LG is embracing the 3D revolution with products that offer the perfect 3D entertainment experience for every occasion and every setting.

FULL LED and Plasma 3D TVs: The Ultimate 3D Viewing Experience
By releasing market-leading sets in an array of different versions, LG is offering customers 3D TVs that are ideally suited to their needs. Top of the range is LG's new LEX8, the world's slimmest (0.88cm) and narrowest bezel (1.25cm) FULL LED TV. In a world first for the TV industry, the LEX8 adds NANO Lighting Technology to LG's FULL LED backlighting to produce pictures that are brighter, clearer and smoother than ever before. Also on show are the new LEX9, which boasts the biggest LED LCD screen yet at a mouth-watering 72 inches, and the LX9500, the world's first FULL LED 3D TV, which was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year.

With an array of LED backlights behind the screen, LG's FULL LED 3D TVs deliver brightness that draws out the sharpest 3D images on the market. While the entire FULL LED 3D TV range comes with localized dimming, the LEX8's dimming function – called Micro Pixel Control – is LG's most advanced yet, delivering a wide and rich array of colors that produce even more gripping 3D pictures. Complementing their outstanding brightness, the LEX8, LEX9 and LX9500 also come with TruMotion 400Hz, which provides an ultra-fast screen refresh rate for the most comfortable 3D images. Completing the effect, the narrow bezel INFINIA Design lets the 3D images practically burst out of the screen, for an astonishingly immersive viewing experience.

Alongside a spectacular 180-inch Plasma 3D TV prototype, LG is also displaying the PX950N, its first Plasma 3D TV and the first TV in the world to receive 3D THX Certification, the ultimate recognition for cinema-quality 3D on a TV. For a truly outstanding 3D picture, 600Hz Max Sub-field Driving ensures smooth viewing of even the fastest action sequences, while LG's 3D Panel phases out light faster to produce images that are practically blur free.

What's more, the Plasma set's self-illuminating pixels enable a wider viewing angle, meaning viewers can see complete, smooth 3D images wherever they choose to sit or even lie down in the living room. In addition, the PX950N supports the Multi Picture Format (MPF) function, enabling users to connect their 3D cameras to the TV and view their 3D pictures directly on the big screen.

Along with the FULL LED models, the PX950N provides effortless, seamless connectivity through NetCast™, DLNA certification and a wireless AV link. With these functions, viewers will have access to a growing range of 3D movies and shows, whether they're online or stored in home digital libraries.

3D Blu-ray Home Theater Systems: Immersive Sound and Vision
Delivering the pinnacle of sound quality, LG's HX995TZ and HLX55W offer a perfect platform for 3D movies and immersive, cinematic sound, along with the connectivity options of NetCast™ and DLNA.

Leading the way is the HX995TZ, a top-of-the-range Blu-ray Home Theater System whose exquisite wall-mountable design blends right in with practically any environment. With 1,100 watts of output, the HX995TZ delivers a truly room-filling sound. For consumers looking for the 3D Home Theater experience on a slightly smaller scale, LG also offers the HX995DF, with 2.1 Ch and 560 watts of output.
Cutting a more compact but no less enticing figure is LG's HLX55W 3D Blu-ray sound bar. Comprising a stylish single black bar with a vertical Blu-ray Disc™ Player in its center, the HLX55W delivers 3D Blu-ray Disc™ Playback accompanied by 430-watt audio output and 4.1 Ch full surround sound. Rounding out the home theater systems is the new HX900, LG's first Real 3D Sound Home Theater System, which embraces a completely new concept in home audio to produce a sound as deep and life-like as any 3D image.

3D Blu-ray Disc™ Players: Perfect Playback, Fabulous Features
LG has also beefed up its video equipment with three superb 3D-friendly models, the HR550, the BD590 and the BX580. Along with Blu-ray Disc™ Playback that is equally outstanding in 2D or 3D, the HR550 comes with built-in DVB-T/C/S tuners that eliminate the need for a digital set-top box. The tuners also make it possible for viewers to record a show or movie on one channel – including in 3D – while simultaneously watching a Blu-ray disc. For people who don't need so much storage space, the BD590 offers all the same superb functions as the HR550, with the sole exception of built-in HDD.

Also a perfect fit for LG's 3D TV range, the BX580 lets users enjoy a variety of 3D content in the Blu-ray format, while retaining outstanding 2D playback as well. In common with the HR550, the BX580 is also equipped with the superb connectivity options of NetCast™ and DLNA.

3D Projectors: Bringing 3D Cinema Home
Increasing the 3D options still further, LG's two 3D projectors – the only selection to offer both Dynamic and CINEMA 3D – bring all the wonder of the 3D cinema experience into the home.

The world's first one-body, dual-engine CINEMA 3D projector transmitting FULL HD pictures, the CF3D can project an exceptional 2D or 3D picture with a diagonal span that stretches up to 200 inches. With TruMotion 100Hz practically eliminating image blur and 3D Auto Picture Calibration creating optimal brightness and color, the CF3D delivers a crisp, stunning blur-free picture. The CF3D also comes with six free pairs of glasses, meaning users can comfortably watch its wall-covering 3D projection in the company of family and friends.

Also at this year's IFA is the BX327, a Dynamic 3D-type (DLP Link 3D Technology) 3D Projector with a picture boasting a diagonal span of up to 150 inches. Delivering the outstanding brightness of 3,200 ANSI-lumens and the superb colors and contrast of 0.55" DMD, the BX327 also produces a beautifully sharp 2D or 3D picture with crisp, perfectly aligned edges. Also, among projectors using DLP Link 3D Technology, the BX327 is the only one with HDMI, meaning users can enjoy 3D images without 3D-compatible graphic cards.

Tactile display allows you to 'feel' both light and shadow

The concept of touching things such as light or smells isn't anything new, but there's so much room for interpretation that it's always interesting to see new applications. At Siggraph 2010, a new tactile display is being shown off which allows the user to feel light and shadow. Called Touch Light Through the Leaves, the device consists of a camera which detects light, and 85 vibration units, which have motors, process the light and shadow information into sensations. Check out the video below to see it in action, and hit up the source link for a bit more info.

而日系品牌的Panel(如Sony...)
