SAN JOSE, USA — Estimates for Internet of Things (IoT) are astounding. According to many research firms, by 2020 there will be more than 50 billion connected devices. How to enable the IoT development community and what’s needed to turn the possibilities into reality have become a frequently-asked question in the industry. The company’s WICED is a small product, and a platform to simplify the out-of-the-box experience in the IoT development era.
Michael Hurlston who is Broadcom's Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales stated that IoT market is still in its infancy. However, by all measures IoT is a huge opportunity.
Based on Broadcom’s 2015 smart home shipment forecast, safety and security ranked No.1 by 21.3 million chip units followed by energy 2.8 million chip units and appliance 1.2 million units.
Michael Hurlston said that the company currently has 320 connectivity embedded designs into the wireless device in China, while 1,000 designs worldwide. “What’s possible in the home energy, safety and security is developed from point to point control today to intelligent control — pattern and proximity, and integrated security in 2020.”
Meanwhile, for what’s possible in the smart appliances Michael Hurlston considered that five years from now cloud connectivity, intelligent power and management and grocery restock will expand to better energy management, failure analytics and door open or close today.
As a matter of fact, there are three critical elements of buiding the IoT development community. “Enabling IoT partnerships, accelerating application development and integrating cloud and web services.” said Stephen DiFranco, Broadcom’s Vice President of Channels, Partners and IoT.
Furthermore, IoT is all about connected device. “The convergence of humans, machines and software.” Therefore, that’s why the company launced a small product, the WICED. “The WICED platform is bringing secure Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) wireless connectivity to nearly every emerging product category in the Internet of Things ecosystem, including home appliances, health and fitness monitors, automation and asset tracking systems, smart meters and an array of consumer electronics devices.” added Stephen DiFranco.
