TAIPEI, Taiwan－ Taiwan PHS company was adjudicated that the termination of the reorganization proceedings by Taipei District Court on Friday, declared bankruptcy, put a full stop on the Taiwan PHS service.
Taiwan PHS company began operating in 2001, gained market acceptance with a lower airtime and low electromagnetic. In the most successful period, the number of users of nearly 1.5 million.
However, PHS lost to follow-up 3G competitors with wider signal cover range and high-speed mobile Internet service. With the revenue droping, Taiwan PHS company filed for reorganization in September 2008. At present, the total number of PHS users about 680,000, but ony 68,000 active users, 10% of total.
Currently, PHS service is limited to the northern region of Taiwan, mostly medical institutes and other specific institutions with the needs of low-power. Therefore, if the end of the Taiwan PHS service goes, has little effect on the users and the Telecom market in Taiwan.
During the reorganization, Taiwan PHS wanted to follow the upgrade model of WILLCOM, a Japanese PHS service provider, to launch high speed internet service equal to 4G with upgrading PHS to XGP. But failed to fund-raising, and eventually took bankruptcy.
According to Taiwan regulations, after the sentence be delivered, Taiwan PHS company can submit appeal within ten days, or obligee may decide to terminate the company operation, officially bankrupt.
