TAIPEI, Taiwan — It seems that octa-core and 64-bit processor have become the standard of mid-tier or high-end handset, Sony is comparably quiet in this hardware specs war, however, supply chain said that Sony is going to launch a high-end octa-core handset. It will be powered by MediaTek's octa-core chipset and ODM by Arima Communications, a growth driver for Taiwanese component firms.
Sony has been boasting for their “OmniBalance design”. Omni means all or everywhere — it represents the omnipresence and the multitude of smartphone uses. This principle of OmniBalance is embodied in the design execution — a minimalistic form where only the essentials remain, with balance and symmetry throughout. It is essentially a plate of glass that has the edges and corners softened and strengthened in an encasing frame.
The problem is customers are getting tired of OmniBalance, rumor has it that Sony planned to roll out new design series of handsets, which will be launched in 2015.
Source said that new design features can be seen in Sony ODM new handsets, one of which has a 5-inch screen, and it is powered by the octa-core chipset MT6752 of MediaTek and is planned to hit the market at first quarter in 2015.
Relatively, HTC launched Desire 820s exclusively in China, and it is powered by MediaTek MT6752, the price is comparably higher than that of the Qualcomm version.
The Sony new series of handst will be a growth driver for many Taiwanese componet firms, including MediaTek, Arima Communications, ELAN Microelectronics, Ichia Technologies, and CATCHER Technology.
